DC Electronic Loads

DC electronic loads accurately simulate the loading of a circuit. Each unit implements sink waveforms which are programmable for voltage, current and power.

When compared to a traditional resistive load bank, a programmable electronic load offers much greater functionality. Sink values of selected models can be adjusted in small increments into the milliamp range, under a variety of waveforms. Whereas, a resistive load bank typically has much less control. Traditional systems do not have the programmability necessary to recreate the complex load steps of real world applications.

Due to variance in user behaviour, the operating waveforms of DC devices can often have many irregular qualities. For example, when testing a discharging xEV battery pack, a cautious driver will create a vastly different waveform than an aggressive driver that accelerates fast and brakes hard. Our DC loads allow the complex loading of an electrical circuit to be precisely simulated.

Common operating features throughout the rental range include OVP/OCP tests, front panel memory as well as CC, CV, CR and CP modes. Rise, fall and plateau times are adjustable in dynamic mode. Grid-tied power recycling loads are available with an embedded function generator, which can create almost any complex DC waveform.

Our rental systems are commonly used for discharging batteries, fuel cell loading, product burn-in trials and testing DC power supplies. Application specific GUIs are available for the LAB-GSS, which allow the DC load to accurately simulate battery pack and capacitor characteristics when testing chargers.

Power Recycling Load with Source Capability


When load testing, each LAB-GSS module recycles DC sink energy back to the grid with typical losses of around 7%. This differs from conventional electronic loads which waste 100% of electrical energy that could be reused, by simply dissipating it as heat. Every unit is compliant with G59-3 regulations, so there is no need for an external monitoring unit.

Each module has an inbuilt eight channel recording scope, adjustable internal resistance, RS-232 and analogue interfaces. An embedded function generator is also provided, which allows virtually any complex DC sink waveform to be created. Each module also functions as a fully programmable DC power supply. This makes the LAB-GSS ideal for researching devices with bidirectional DC power flows.

Our rental systems can be combined in series, parallel or matrix configurations with any LAB-GSS modules you have previously purchased, providing they have the same nominal outputs. This allows any short term requirements outside of usual operating ranges to be met.

High Current High Power Loads


This range of high power electronic loads provides up to 4000A of sink capability at 20kW. Systems are configured from individual 5kW DC loads operated in parallel connection. Each load can operate in nine different modes: CC, CV, CR, CP, CV+CC, CV+CP, MPPT, dynamic and short mode. Dual setting and measurement ranges are provided.

A 150-state memory is accessible via the front panel, which allows quick initialisation and limit-setting of the units. A sequencing function means that stored settings can be implemented against time, enabling the unit to carry out state-dependant and complex test routines from the front panel. Removable computer interfaces are also available on request.

10kW High Voltage Load


A 10kW/1000V precision DC electronic load is available for high voltage applications, such as testing renewables. Dual setting and measurement ranges are combined with 5-digit displays which provide high resolution for both measurement and setting.

In dynamic mode, adjustable rise, fall and plateau times allow testing of high voltage DC energy, from photovoltaic cells or high voltage batteries. Dedicated short circuit, OCP and OPP tests allow power supply behaviour and protection mechanisms to be characterised. 150-state memory is provided which allows quick initialisation and limit-setting of the unit.

A sequencing function means that stored settings can be implemented against time, enabling the unit to carry out state-dependant and complex test routines without the need for a computer interface.

19" Rackmount High Current Load


This high current electronic load provides sink capability of 1000A from 700mV up to 60V. Two load ranges are provided with auto crossover in CC mode. The unit can operate in CC, CV, CR, CP, Dynamic and Short Modes. Current Slew Rate is adjustable for both ranges. To aid production testing to a pre-set value the unit is equipped with a GO/NG indicator.

The unit has 150 memory locations with auto sequence capability, to speed up changes of test parameters. The LCD display simultaneously shows voltage, current and power. The unit is supplied in a flight case for ease of use.

DC Electronic Load with AC Functions


This 1.8kW electronic load features both DC and AC sink functions. Waveforms can be recalled from the front panel, or selected via the GPIB and RS-232 interfaces. The load can also be operated in constant resistance or linear CC mode. To aid production testing, upper and lower limits can be set with GO/NG indication.

A dual 4½ digit display indicates the voltage and current taken by the load. A wattmeter and VAmeter are also provided. An oscilloscope can be connected to the front panel isolated current monitor, so the user can view the load current.

Dynamic DC Electronic Load Modules


These true dynamic loads offer an incredible degree of functionality. Constant current, resistance, voltage and power operation are provided. Dual ranges for CC and CR modes enable tight resolution at the lower end. Voltage, current and power values are simultaneously shown on the 4½ digit displays.

The front panel voltage and ammeters have a 16-bit resolution, offering a high degree of accuracy. An adjustable short mode along with OCP and OPP tests are also inbuilt. The load can be set to turn on and off at a preset voltage level, making these units ideal for discharging batteries. An input for connecting an arbitrary waveform generator is provided to enable the unit to follow complex load patterns.

DC Load Modules with AC Functions


These DC loads operate in constant current and resistance modes, as well as featuring full AC functionality. Modules are available with nominal sink values up to 4A or 300V. Waveforms can be recalled or enabled from the front panel, or via the computer interface. Dual 4½ digit displays clearly show the voltage and current values at the load terminals.

Remote sense is provided to counter any voltage drop in the load lines. An external analogue input enables the ELPA-3250 modules to load according to an external signal. This allows complex waveforms to be set up on a function generator. For batch testing, upper and lower limits can be adjusted to signal a pass or fail.

Dual Channel DC Load Modules


Each ELP-3330 load module offers two independently adjustable channels. A five digit high resolution display shows V, I & P simultaneously for both load channels. Each channel has CC, CR, CV & CP operating modes along with a programmable short test function. Adjustable overcurrent and overpower protection test modes are also provided for testing PSU limits.

When in constant current or power modes, dynamic operation is possible allowing the load to switch between two current levels. The slew rate can be adjusted, along with the time spent at the higher and lower load levels. Remote sense capability is also provided to counter voltage drops in the load lines.
